Discussion
This extreme occurred at the Snag Aerodome which was in operation from 1943 to 1966. The minimum thermometer at site was graduated only to -80°F (Court and Samela, 1963). Following laboratory calibration of the instrument, an error of approximately 3°F was discovered and so the value of -81.4°F (-63°C) was established for the vent by the Canadian Meteorological Service Thomson, 1958: Lowest temperature in Canada, Monthly Weather Review, 86(8), pp. 298; . The antecedent weather conditions included an influx of cold Arctic air together with clear and calm air (Wexler 1948).
