Discussion

A record of 50°C on 4/8/1881 at Seville, Spain has been cited in many reports (see, for example, U.S. Environmental Science Services Administration, 1967: Temperature Extremes, National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (US) ) as the 'highest temperature recorded in Europe.' However, this record is questionable due to the use of Montsouris (an open stand) rather than the standard Stevenson screen. Detailed study of the differences between the two stands indicates that the adjusted temperature would be lower. In terms of standard Stevenson screen measurement practices, the record temperature at Murcia of 47.2°C is accepted.
